Winter Is Here - Don’t Let It Slay Your Skin! Follow these Winter Skincare Tips

Winter Skincare Tips

We think there’s a reason why the characters in Game of Thrones like to harp about the fact that winter is coming—and it has nothing to do with dragons! It’s the combination of frosty temps, dry air and wintry winds. Whether you’re dealing with the polar vortex in Pennsylvania or weathering the scary Santa Ana winds in Cali, winter can do a real number on your complexion. Luckily for you, there’s a lot you can do to keep the skin dragons at bay.

The Best Offense Is a Good Defense

As your favorite football players know, the best way to stop the enemy in its tracks is to aggressively pursue a winning strategy. With winter skin, this means that you’ll be moisturizing before trouble strikes. And you’ll want to think holistically about your skin, not just your face. After all, people are more likely to notice your cracked hands than the dry skin on your forehead. Keep those gloves on when you’re out in the elements—and don’t be afraid to partake in some paraffin treatments when you get home.

Don’t neglect those gams, either! Since wintry weather can leave your legs less than luxurious, shaving can become a more daunting endeavor than ever. Applying a scrub and then using a moisturizing shave cream can help to ameliorate these issues before they even crop up. Keep cracked heels in check by applying a fortifying foot cream at night.

Regarding those luscious lips, remember that they’re the first thing many people notice about your face. If you didn’t already know that lip exfoliants are a thing…you do now! And winter is the best time to use them. After exfoliating, of course, you’ll want to apply a nice moisturizer or balm.

Another area that people tend to let slip through the cracks (pun intended!) is the scalp. Rounds of holiday parties, overaggressive heating systems at work and dry shampoo can leave you with the worst “gift” of all—dandruff. In order to stave off the dandruff dragons, ditch the sulfates when it comes to your shampoo.

Supercharge Your Facial Skin Strategy

One way to power through the exfoliation process is to make use of some retinol products. These topical versions of Vitamin A will blast through those dark spots and dry areas like a snow truck, uncovering pristine skin underneath. However, too much of a good thing can be very bad when it comes to retinoid creams. If you use too much product, you can leave your skin looking red and irritated, which is the last thing you want to do in wintertime. Also, retinol creams are so potent that they render your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so forgetting your sunblock is not an option when you’re using them.
