Keratosis pilaris is a fairly common yet completely harmless skin condition. It creates little hard bumps that often feel like sandpaper to the touch. They are usually light-colored and you’ll find them on your upper arms, thighs, and buttocks. Sometimes they will swell or become red. Very rarely they have been known to affect the face.

Sometimes it can be itchy, but other than that, keratosis pilaris never worsens. It commonly affects children and teenagers but typically disappears once they get older. It is caused by a buildup of keratin, which is a protein that your body needs to protect skin from harmful things like infections. But too much of a good thing like keratin can block up the opening in the hair follicle. It’s still unknown as to why this occurs, however those with dry skin are more likely to be affected by it. Keratosis pilaris is often worse in the colder months when there is less moisture in the air.

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent keratosis pilaris but there are ways to diminish the effects. When bathing, use warm water instead of hot which will dry out your skin. Also, limit the time you spend in water for the same reason. Avoid scratching at it or rubbing the affected area roughly. Consider using a humidifier to add moisture into the air in your home. And of course, one of the best things to do is moisturize with a good moisturizer that is thick and rich with skin-loving nutrients.
